We probably don’t need to tell you that Udon Thani is a provincial capital city in northeast Thailand. One of the regions big four that includes Khon Khon, Korat (Nakhon Ratchisima) and Ubon Ratchatani.
You may be more interested in why Udon has become more popular both as great place to retire and a tourist hub.
It’s great value for money in Udon and you can enjoy a good life up here on any sort of income with the cost of living being so low. Great food, open spaces, nightlife, what’s not to like?

50 Km up the road is Nong Khai and the border with the neighbouring country of Laos. 125 Km the other way is Khon Kaen province itself a burgeoning area.
The great thing about the whole area of Isaan is that not as developed as the tourist trail further south and of course not as congested as Bangkok. That’s not to south the north east of Thailand doesn’t receive its fair share of tourists. Indeed, wikipedia will tell you about Wat Phothisomphon a Buddhist temple complex, Udon Thani Park, Nong Prachak Lake an island with a plant-filled garden. Plus the Udon Sunshine Orchid Farm growing a breed of orchids known for their fragrance. Also east of the city is Ban Chiang, an archaeological site with Bronze Age farming and burial artifacts.
Also did you know that Udon is one of increasingly few places in Thailand where locals seem to actually like the idea that foreigners want to live in their city! We still see lots of smiles in the Udon.
